My Journey As A Freelancer
It wasn’t too long ago where the term “Freelancer” was a pretty misunderstood term for me. I had a full-time job at a Flexographic printing company where I was completing my apprenticeship as a Print Machinist. I had already done my Diploma in Graphic Design and was a bit lost at the time in what to do with my life — so becoming a qualified tradesmen seemed like the best thing in the world, or so I thought. I was offered a full-time job as a Printer upon completion of my studies with good money and although I was stoked I finished it — I might just have been the most unhappy dude ever at the same time! It was dawning on me that I was going to be signing up to do something that I just wasn’t interested in and would completely drive me mad — so I quit.
Yes, totally terrifying at the time and I cannot express how absolutely happy I was for doing so. I saved up a the bit of money that I had and my girlfriend and I went on a 3 month trip to Thailand and Bali. At this point I still wasn’t even sure what to do for work when it was time to come home. I was going through a massive change in my life — so the word Freelancer became my new favourite word. I decided to start my own business, Judy is Punk Branding & Design Co. I chose this name as I was so over hearing so and so design or so and so creative that I just went completely left field (FYI there is nothing wrong with those names and only chose my own because I wanted to be different to others and convey my own style).
I came home and realised that being a Freelancer was actually one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. I was working from home, meeting people that I really enjoyed working with and most importantly — found the happiness that I always wanted. Don’t get me wrong, being a your own boss doesn’t mean you earn big bucks. In fact, its quite the opposite. The trade off is just being able to do what you love and enjoy life to the fullest — because someday this beautiful movie called life ends and when I look back I just want to be able to say “Wow that was the most amazing thing Ive ever seen!"
So to all you badass designers, Illustrators and beyond out there who love what you do, just fucking do it — because you’ll be surprised that doing the thing your best at actually works in the society we live in. Make sure you can hit the end credits with your hearts pounding and have adrenaline to the max because if there is one thing I’m certain of for all of us — is that we deserve to be happy!
